Lifesaving leukemia treatment now available in Wichita

KU School of Medicine-Wichita Doctors Nathan Hall and Brian Pate helped to bring the treatment, "blinatumomab, to Wichita in the fall of 2024. For patients with an average risk of relapse from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, survival rates rose to 97.5% with the new drug regimen vs. 90.2% for those without blinatumomab. For high-risk patients, survival rates rose to 94.1% with the new regimen versus 84.8% without blinatumomab. One family that's been touched by the new cure is Blanca Alvarado and her daughter Giana. Giana was diagnosed with leukemia in March of 2023 and immediately started chemotherapy.
